League Cycling Instructors
April 13, 2010 in Commuter Resources by meredith joy
The League of American Bicyclists offers the nation’s only certification program for cycling instructors, and Columbus is in luck: as of last summer, our region gained 7 LCIs (League Cycling Instructors), taking us from 3 to 10! The entire LCI team is available this Challenge season to help you and your colleagues learn to ride lawfully and confidently on our roads and trails. Check the Bike Month calendar for scheduled classes, but feel free to contact LCI Ken Cohen for special requests. Several types of courses are available:
- Intensive two-day courses have classroom, parking lot and on-road elements, and cover absolutely everything you need to get road-ready. This is the perfect course for beginners or for more experienced cyclists who need to fill some gaps in their knowledge of lawful and competent cycling.
- Five-hour blended courses cover the basic laws, gear, route selection, lane positioning, etc. of commuting by bicycle and give students the opportunity to get out on the roads with their bikes. This course provides students with essential information and also gives them practical experience riding properly in traffic.
- Three-hour classroom courses cover the basic laws, gear, route selection, lane positioning, etc. of commuting by bicycle. This course packs a ton of essential information into an evening or weekend afternoon.
- Two-hour guided rides train cyclists on proper lane positioning, road etiquette, scanning/signalling techniques, etc. This course is key to helping people translate knowledge of cycling into the ability to ride—after all, there is no better way to learn than just getting out there and doing it!
- One-hour presentations (for example, over lunchtime) cover the basics in abbreviated fashion; they can also be set up as a casual Q&A-style forum. This is a great way to introduce people to the concept of bicycling for transportation, or to promoting the Challenge within your organization.
- Etc. etc. etc. Courses can be tailored to your unique needs, just ask!
All LCIs are fully insured and trained as ride leaders.
